About Us
The Department of Experimental Medicine (DEM) is the first Department started in the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in the year 1992. The Department is involved in multidisciplinary research in infectious diseases to address the challenging issues that are relevant to the society. Its focus mainly on HIV and Leptospirosis.
The Department is recognized as a National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for HIV testing under the External Quality Assurance (EQA) Program of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) since the year 2000.
The NRL in the Department is in charge of six State Reference Laboratories (SRLs) covering the Microbiology Departments of Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem, K.A.P Viswanatham Government Medical College, Trichy, Tirunelveli Medical College, Tirunelveli, Government Thoothukudi Medical College, Thoothukudi, Government Kanyakumari Medical College, Kanyakumari, and JIPMER, Puducherry.
The HIV Testing Laboratory has been assessed and accredited by National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (NABL) -Certificate No: MC-2204 valid till 17.05.2030.
