Silver Jubilee Year Celebrations

During the 22nd Convocation held on 3-11-2011, the Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, had laid the foundation stone for construction of Silver Jubilee Year Block – Guest House and Auditorium in the campus of this University. The P.W.D. has undertaken the work of construction. Tomorrow (28-2-2012) is the last date for submission of tender. After finalizing the tender, the work will be started within a week’s time.

Regarding Improvement of Quality of Medical Education

The Dental Council of India in letter No.130-2011/S-5861, dt. 27-1-12 have conveyed that

“The eligibility criteria and other provisions prescribing admission examination, syllabus, curriculum etc. in course regulations framed by DCI are bare minimum, if the State Government/Affiliating University, however so desire to prescribe higher than that of Regulation for maintaining higher standard of dental education in their State, they are free to prescribe the same but not inconsistent with the provisions of the Dentist Act and Regulations made thereunder”

The MCI has already committed in the affidavit in W.P. No.23030 of 2011 in paragraph 16 filed before the Division Bench of the Hon.High Court, Madras that higher requirement than the minimum requirement laid down by the appellant University is permissible in law.

The MCI has already been addressed, citing the above commitment, to send their consent for implementing the reforms proposed by this University. Their reply is awaited.

A meeting of all the Vice-Chancellors of Medical Universities with the Board of Governors of MCI is scheduled on 11th March 2012 at New Delhi. All the issues connected with the MCI will be raised for proper implementation.

Regarding collection of Capitation fees for PG Dental Courses by the Dental Colleges as appeared in the news paper

The explanation from the concerned persons said to have been involved has been called for

The Hon.Minister for Health, Govt. of Tamil Nadu has been addressed in letter dt.22-2-2012 (with a copy to the following)

  • Secretary to Govt., Health and Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Tamil Nadu,
  • Director of Medical Education
  • Secretary Selection Committee

To initiate action regarding allotment of 50% of total sanctioned intake in PG course in the Private Medical/Dental Colleges during the academic year 2012-13. If this is implemented, the State would get about 150 PG seats in Medical and 50 PG seats in Dental for allotment among the private Medical and DentalColleges. The University will not register more than 50% of total sanctioned intake under management quota in PG Degrees of Medical and Dental Courses in Private colleges from the academic year 2012-13.
